Look at what you’ve made. Beautiful, isn’t it? But does it work? For whom does it work? Of course you can use it, but can anyone else? In short, is it functional?
At the heart of every piece of practical design, whether it be a website, product package, office building, manufacturing system, piece of furniture, software interface, book cover, tool, or anything else, there is a function, a task the item is expected to perform. Most functions can be achieved in a variety of ways, but there are some basic elements a designer needs to take into account to create a product that best fulfills its intended function.
These are the elements of functional design, the process of responding to the needs or desires of the people who will use an item in a way that allows their needs or desires to be met. Functional design is both an outcome and a process. As an outcome, it describes products that work well to perform their assigned tasks; as a process, functional design is a set of practices guided by the principles that produce that positive outcome. (Functional design is also a computer modeling technique, but that’s not what we’re discussing here.)

Web design has significantly improved over the last years. It’s more user-friendly and more appealing today — and there is a good reason behind it: over the years we’ve found out that design with focus on usability and user experience is just more effective. Modern cut-edge design isn’t filled with loud happy talk and blinking advertisements. We’ve learnt to initiate the dialogue with visitors, involve them into discussions and gain their trust by addressing their needs and speaking with them honestly and directly.
Rational Unified Process
Der Rational Unified Process (RUP) ist ein kommerzielles Produkt der Firma Rational Software, die seit 2003 Teil des IBM-Konzerns ist. Es beinhaltet sowohl ein Vorgehensmodell zur Softwareentwicklung als auch die dazugehörigen Softwareentwicklungsprogramme. IBM entwickelt den RUP und die zugehörige Software weiter. Der RUP benutzt die Unified Modeling Language (UML) als Notationssprache. Der RUP wurde von Philippe Kruchten in seiner Urform erstmals 1998 vorgestellt.
Spiralmodell
Das Spiralmodell ist ein Vorgehensmodell in der Softwareentwicklung, das im Jahr 1986 von Barry W. Boehm beschrieben wurde. Es ist ein generisches Vorgehensmodell und daher offen für bereits existierende Vorgehensmodelle. Das Management kann immer wieder eingreifen, da man sich spiralförmig voran entwickelt.
Extreme Programming
Extreme Programming (XP; auch Extremprogrammierung) ist eine Methode, die das Lösen einer Programmieraufgabe in den Vordergrund der Softwareentwicklung stellt und dabei einem formalisierten Vorgehen geringere Bedeutung zumisst. Diese Vorgehensweise definiert ein Vorgehensmodell der Softwaretechnik, das sich den Anforderungen des Kunden in kleinen Schritten annähert. Die Wirksamkeit des Ansatzes ist umstritten (siehe Abschnitt Kritik).
V-Modell
Das V-Modell ist ein Vorgehensmodell in der Softwareentwicklung, bei dem der Softwareentwicklungsprozess in Phasen organisiert wird. Neben diesen Entwicklungsphasen definiert das V-Modell auch das Vorgehen zur Qualitätssicherung (Testen) phasenweise.
Kanban
Kanban ist ein Vorgehensmodell zur Softwareentwicklung, bei dem die Anzahl paralleler Arbeiten, der Work in Progress (WiP), reduziert und somit schnellere Durchlaufzeiten erreicht und Probleme – insbesondere Engpässe – schnell sichtbar gemacht werden sollen.
Wasserfallmodell
Das Wasserfallmodell ist ein lineares (nicht iteratives) Vorgehensmodell, insbesondere für die Softwareentwicklung, das in Phasen organisiert wird. Dabei gehen die Phasenergebnisse wie bei einem Wasserfall immer als bindende Vorgaben für die nächsttiefere Phase ein.
Agile Softwareentwicklung
Agile Softwareentwicklung ist der Oberbegriff für den Einsatz von Agilität (lateinisch agilis: flink; beweglich) in der Softwareentwicklung. Agile Softwareentwicklung versucht mit geringem bürokratischen Aufwand, wenigen Regeln und meist einem iterativen Vorgehen auszukommen.
